Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has vowed to intensify the fight against illicit brews and drug abuse among the youth.

Speaking on Friday in Narok, Murkomen emphasized his commitment to eradicating the sale and distribution of harmful substances targeting young people.

"My job is to fight illegal alcohol, which is sold in sachets, contains ethanol, which is bad and is killing our children," he said.

"All chiefs are under instructions and our police officers to make sure that we get rid of all the drugs and all the illegal alcohol that is killing our children," the CS said.

The CS said he was saddened by how young people were wasting away on drugs, especially college, and university students.

"You find someone lying on the terrace at three in the morning and he is a young boy who would have been dependent on his family. Many families are being hurt and what hurts me the most is that those who sell drugs have entered schools, colleges and universities, and we are losing a very young generation," the CS lamented.

"...again, we will make sure that we get rid of this by ensuring that we do security operations, we arrest those who are selling drugs and must be taken to court, and removed from the society."

In February 2025, National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse board chairman Stephen Mairori said 53 per cent of Kenyans have used different types of drugs in their lifetime.

This is according to a report compiled by the Authority.

The survey conducted among university students showed that female students were the highest drug abusers, as compared to previous reports where male students were victims.

Noting this, Mairori urged county governments to assist in the campaigns against drug abuse aimed at sensitizing society.

He further urged county governments to collaborate with different organisations and stakeholders to help curb the increased drug and substance abuse.
