Deputy President Kithure Kindiki had a busy week, accompanying President William Ruto on an extensive tour of Nairobi County.
This marked the first time Kindiki joined Ruto in a high-profile political tour of the capital, as Kenya Kwanza seeks to consolidate its influence in Nairobi.
The tour took place just hours after President Ruto signed a cooperation agreement with former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
The public signing of the memorandum of understanding at Nairobi’s KICC appeared to be a game-changer, giving Ruto and Kindiki a free hand to traverse the city.
They were joined by Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, who also received a warm reception from residents as they inspected and launched various development projects.
The tour began with the commissioning of the Kamukunji Technical and Vocational College, followed by the launch of the Nairobi Regeneration Programme.
Kindiki highlighted that the project—extending into Kajiado, Kiambu, Machakos, and Murang’a counties—aims to restore Nairobi to its rightful status.
“When I was Interior Cabinet Secretary, the President instructed me to lead efforts to reclaim land along the Nairobi Rivers. Now, it’s time to clean the river, build houses, and create jobs to ensure our city is clean and secure. The Nairobi Regeneration Project is a massive initiative that will employ thousands of youth and transform Nairobi into a world-class city,” Kindiki stated.
Kindiki also joined President Ruto as he commissioned the upgrading of Desert Pitch in Kamukunji Constituency and inspection of the ongoing works at the Shauri Moyo B Social and Affordable Housing Project.
On Tuesday, Kindiki was in Mathare Constituency where he accompanied Ruto for the launch of development projects.
He said the government is investing in accessible, relevant, and comprehensive education for all the children in the Country, equipping them with skills and knowledge for the economic transformation of our motherland and preparing them for the global market.
Kindiki also joined Ruto as he officially opened the newly constructed 800-bed dormitory at St. Teresa Girls Secondary School and commissioned the construction of Mabatini Secondary School.
They also inspected the ongoing works at Mathare North Modern Market and the neighbouring Utalii Police Post and broke the ground for the construction of the Mathare Lot 1 Social Housing Programme.
“To facilitate speedier and easier access to National Government services, the Government is fast-tracking the operationalization of gazetted administrative units and establishing new ones. This includes new sub-counties in Nairobi County, among them, Ruaraka Sub-County, whose headquarters were commissioned by the President today,’’ Kindiki said.
On Wednesday, Kindiki joined President Ruto in the tour of Dagoretti North Constituency where they assessed the ongoing construction of new classrooms at Kawangware Primary School.
They also officially opened a tuition block at Gatina Junior Secondary School to boost enrollment in the area.
“Quality, accessible and relevant education is at the heart of the economic and social transformation of our country," he said.
Kindiki said the government will upgrade existing infrastructure in schools, establish new learning institutions, recruit and deploy more teachers, build more classrooms, laboratories, and administration blocks in schools across the country.
This, he said, will ensure that every child is accommodated, including those in marginalised areas and densely populated urban areas.
