Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has been bestowed the East African Humanitarian Personality of the Year award.

He was awarded for his support to vulnerable groups in society through the Sonko Rescue Team (SRT).

Speaking after receiving the award, Sonko said that he dedicates the award to all beneficiaries of the SRT.

“I am highly delighted by the great honour bestowed on me by the E360 Entertainment team for conferring me as the East African Humanitarian Personality of the Year in a colourful gala night held at the Nairobi Cinema last evening.

“This award is a true manifestation of the humanity work we have been undertaking of helping the vulnerable and marginalised in our society. I dedicate this award to all the beneficiaries of our different programs under the umbrella of Sonko Rescue Team,” he said.

The former governor was awarded in the just concluded E360 Awards.

The award was received by the former Governor’s Media Liaison officer Nickko Nyamai, who represented him.

Mike Sonko is known for his philanthropy, which has seen him receive honorary degrees, including being naked goodwill ambassador in recognition of his works to communities.

While SRT primarily served residents of Nairobi, the services have been extended to Mombasa where Sonko unsuccessfully sought to vie for governor in 2022.

SRT launched while he served as Senator of Nairobi offers services including ambulances, hearses, breakdowns, wedding transport, water, security and emergency responses services.

Last year, SRT was among over 2,800 Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO) that faced deregistration for non-compliance with the Public Benefit Organisations (PBO) Act, 2013.

The former governor, however, pledged to sustain the operations of Sonko Rescue Team (SRT) despite threats of deregistration.

Speaking in Nairobi, Sonko assured the public that SRT would comply with all legal requirements to avoid disruption of services.

“Many people rely on us, we are committed to continuing this work within the bounds of the law,” he said.

Adding that, “We are law-abiding and ready to engage with PBORA to address their concerns.”
