Rainfall is expected to continue in several parts of the country according to a new forecast by the weatherman.

The five-day weather forecast shows isolated heavy rainfall events are likely to occur in parts of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, Southeastern lowlands, Coast, Northeastern and Northwestern Kenya.

Mary Githinji who issued the weather forecast on behalf of the director of Meteorological Services said average daytime (maximum) temperatures of more than 30 degrees celsius will be experienced at the Coast, Northeastern and Northwestern Kenya.

“Average night-time (minimum) temperatures will be less than 10 degrees celsius in some parts of the Highlands East of the Rift Valley and the Central Rift Valley,” she said.

The forecast says morning rains are expected over a few places in the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin and the Rift Valley.

These include Nandi, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Siaya, Busia, Baringo, Nakuru, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, West Pokot, Kisii, Nyamira, Kericho, Bomet, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori and Narok counties.

There will be afternoon and night showers, while thunderstorms are likely to occur over a few places.

Northwestern Kenya counties of Turkana and Samburu will experience morning rains as well as afternoon and night showers. Thunderstorms are also expected.

In Nairobi, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu and Tharaka-Nithi, rains are expected in the morning.

“Afternoon and night showers and thunderstorms are likely to occur over few places, occasionally spreading,” the agency said.

In the Northeastern counties of Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa and Isiolo, morning rains as well as afternoon and night showers and thunderstorms are likely to occur.

Morning rains as well as afternoon and night showers and thunderstorms are likely to occur in the Southeastern lowlands counties of Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, Kajiado and Taita-Taveta, as well as the inland parts of Tana-River.

These may occasionally spread to several other places. At the Coast, counties of Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale and parts of Tana River will experience morning, afternoon and night showers.

Githinji said rainfall continued to be recorded in most parts of the country. She said heavy rainfall (more than 50mm in 24hrs) was received in Kitui, Makueni, Isiolo, Embu, Murang’a, Migori, Uasin Gishu, Taita Taveta and West Pokot.

The weatherman said last week, the highest seven-day rainfall of 155.4mm was recorded at Mayori Rainfall Station in Embu County.

“Ivukuvuku Rainfall Station in Kitui county recorded the highest amount of rainfall within 24 hours,” she said.
