Former Judiciary Chief Registrar Anne Amadi has outlined why she believes she is the best candidate for the position of chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

During her interview with the IEBC selection panel, Amadi emphasized that her extensive experience in high-pressure roles within the Judiciary makes her well-suited for the job.

Speaking before the panel chaired by Dr. Nelson Makanda, Amadi highlighted her tenure as Chief Judiciary Registrar, saying she worked closely with at least three Chief Justices and gained invaluable exposure.

“I bring a diverse skill set to the IEBC chair position. The role requires both leadership and sound judgment, as well as extensive interactions with various stakeholders,” she told the panel on Monday.

“I consider myself a unifier by nature and character, having acquired vast experience working in high-pressure institutions.”

Amadi noted that her previous role as Judiciary Chief Registrar and Secretary to the Judicial Service Commission gave her a deep understanding of how commissions operate.

“It is a high-pressure position, and there are moments when it gets intense, requiring the chair to take a firm stance,” she said.

Explaining the role of the IEBC chairperson in steering the commission, Amadi stated that the position is crucial in stabilizing the institution and providing strategic direction.

“The chair plays a key role in setting the agenda. It is important to rally members around it to ensure collective support,” she said.

"It is not just about introducing an agenda but also about ensuring shared roles and responsibilities. The chair must engage commission members effectively to build relationships that advance the commission’s mission.”

Amadi also emphasized the need for a strong working relationship between the chairperson and the commission secretary.

“Having served as secretary in a busy institution, I clearly understand the boundaries of the chairperson’s role to prevent overreach,” she told the panel.

Amadi retired from the Judiciary in 2024 after serving for 10 years as an accounting officer for the institution.

The Dr. Nelson Makanda-led selection panel is currently interviewing 11 candidates shortlisted for the IEBC chairperson position.

The successful candidate will succeed the late Wafula Chebukati, who passed away last month after completing his six-year term in 2023.

The interviews are being conducted at the College of Insurance in South C, Nairobi.
