Equity Bank’s handball team has thrown down the gauntlet at the 2025 Genocide Memorial handball tournament in Kigali, Rwanda, storming into the knockout stages with a perfect record and growing confidence.

According to Equity sports coordinator Nick Ongeri, the Kenyan side has what it takes to go all the way after delivering a string of commanding performances in the group stage.

Equity opened their campaign with a tightly contested 25-22 win over Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) at the Amahoro Stadium.

Despite falling behind early, Equity kept their composure, with national team goalkeeper Teddy Sidai standing tall between the posts.

His lightning-quick reflexes and sharp positioning proved decisive, keeping UPDF at bay and allowing Equity to turn the tide with a flurry of fast-break goals in the dying minutes.

Buoyed by their hard-earned victory, Equity returned to the court with renewed intensity, dismantling Rwanda’s Rukava 27-17 in their second match.

Left back Radzi Stower stole the spotlight, slicing through the Rwandan defence with precision to bag 10 goals and deservedly claim the Man of the Match honours. But the team saved their most ruthless performance for last.

Against Rwanda’s Huye, Equity unleashed their full attacking arsenal, cruising to a 45-12 demolition that not only sealed their top spot in the pool but also sent a warning shot to their knockout-stage rivals. Ongeri praised the squad’s discipline and adaptability, hailing their ability to rise to the occasion when the stakes were highest.

"The team demonstrated exceptional focus and delivered when it mattered most," Ongeri stated.

With tougher tests looming, Ongeri revealed the technical bench is focused on fine-tuning key aspects ahead of the quarterfinals.

"The energy within the squad is palpable, and there's a strong desire to succeed. We've identified key areas for improvement from these matches, particularly minimising penalties and maximising our fast-break opportunities as we move into the knockout stages," he added.
