The government has walked the talk and moved to avert resurgent inter-communial clashes on the Narok-Kisii border by posting police officers to the Kiango Police Patrol Base as promised by Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen last week.
Renewed clashes between youth from the Trans Mara and Kisii regions over alleged cattle theft erupted on March 4, resulting in injuries and destruction of property with reports indicating that eight people were injured, and at least three killed.
Following the flare-up of violence around the Transmara West area in Narok county and the Bomachoge Borabu border in Kisii county, Murkomen convened and peace and security meeting on Friday, March 14 to seek a lasting solution to the skirmishes.
"During my visit to the Narok-Kisii border last week Friday, I directed the Deputy Inspector General of Kenya Police Service Eliud Lagat to operationalise Kiango Police Patrol Base to enhance security in the area following a flare-up of inter-communal violence," the CS recounted developments of the meeting on X Tuesday evening.
"I'm glad to report that police officers have been posted to the base and the Chief has taken over the Chief's Office in Kiango market."
Murkomen has also directed the Deputy County Commissioner of Transmara West subcounty to facilitate the area Chief to operate from the Kiango market.
"We are doing everything possible to make sure normalcy returns to the border and people can go about their daily activities as before," the CS affirmed.
The border clashes escalated after a cow and calf were allegedly stolen from the Kisii side of the border, resulting in injuries and destruction of property.
Rival groups engaged in battle using bows and arrows.
A crisis meeting convened by political leaders from both sides in the Kiango area helped calm emotions and restore peace ahead of Murkomen's meeting, which was attended by residents and leaders from the region.
In a tweet after the meeting, Murkomen said he would "later lead another peace meeting at Empurkel Mosocho as part of our commitment to ensuring lasting cohesion in the area".
