Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has said that the Nairobi Regeneration project will start on Monday, March 10, 2025.
Speaking in Eastleigh, Kindiki, who had accompanied President William Ruto as he began a weeklong development tour of Nairobi, said the project will ensure the Nairobi Rivers are cleaned.
He said it will also see cleaning of the city’s sewerage system to protect the people from any effects of contamination, as well as disruptions by floods.
“The President is today commencing a massive Nairobi Regeneration Project that entails cleaning Nairobi City Rivers and the sewage system to ensure the people are safe from contamination and flood waters,” Kindiki said.
In additional remarks, Kindiki urged all Kenyans to unite for the development of the country.
He said that the President was leading by example and all communities and religions should follow suit for the development of the country.
“As the President has shown us, we must unite for the country to develop. The President has united with all the leaders to ensure all communities and religions in our country are united and press ahead as a prosperous nation.”
According to President Ruto, who also spoke on the same, the project will also give room for the construction of social housing under the affordable housing project.
He added that it will also create jobs for at least 30,000 youths in the city.
On November 12, 2024, Ruto hosted Members of Parliament from Nairobi County at State House, Nairobi.
Ruto said he was impressed with the progress of the Nairobi Rivers regeneration, saying that garbage has been cleared in at least 75 kilometres of the 94-kilometre stretch.
"Additionally, 69 km of the basin has been unclogged and 56 km levelled. To conserve the rivers' basin, 272,000 seedlings have been planted and 268 tree nurseries established," the President said at the time.
The Head of State urged the city MPs to set aside political differences and support the initiative, which he described as a key step toward upgrading the status of Nairobi.
