The long-awaited modernisation and expansion of Suneka Airstrip in Kisii County will officially begin next week after the government appointed a new contractor to undertake the project, Internal Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo has announced.

Omollo said delays that had stalled the project had been resolved following President William Ruto's recent visit to the region.

‎He said the initial contractor encountered challenges that slowed implementation, prompting the government to appoint a new contractor to fast-track the works.

‎"Previously, there were some challenges with the contractor who had been awarded the modernisation and expansion of the Suneka Airstrip project. Following the President's visit, a new contractor has been brought on board," Omollo said.

‎Speaking during a church fundraiser at Kenyoro SDA Church in Bonchari, Kisii County, Omollo added that all the necessary documentation was completed and signed this week, paving the way for construction to begin.

‎"The necessary paperwork was finalised this week and signed off. By next week, the contractor will be on site to begin the work," he said.

‎According to the PS, the upgraded airstrip will significantly improve air transport in the Gusii region by enabling residents to access air travel closer to home instead of travelling long distances to neighbouring counties.

‎"The people of Kisii will no longer have to travel all the way to Kisumu, Homa Bay or Migori just to access flights. The project will make travel much more convenient," Omollo said.

‎He said the project is expected to enhance regional connectivity, stimulate trade and investment, improve tourism and create new economic opportunities for the county.

‎Omollo also lauded political leaders from the region for working together to support development projects, saying cooperation between leaders was key to delivering services to wananchi.

‎"I want to appreciate our leaders for answering the call. This demonstrates to the people of Kisii and the entire country that when leaders work together, it is possible to develop this nation," he said.

‎He also urged continued collaboration between leaders, communities and the church, noting that faith-based institutions play a critical role in promoting social cohesion and national development.

‎"It shows what we can achieve when we come together and contribute to the development of our churches because of the crucial role the church plays in moving this country forward," Omollo said.
