At least three people have been shot and injured after violence broke out during a women and youth empowerment event at Umoja Secondary School in Kuresoi North, Nakuru county.
The event, led by Susan Kihika, descended into chaos after Alfred Mutai arrived, triggering a confrontation between rival groups of supporters.
The three victims, who sustained gunshot wounds on their hands and legs, were rushed to Molo Level 4 Hospital, where they were receiving treatment. Police said investigations are underway to establish who fired the shots.
One of the victims, Job Kiprono, who was shot in the right hand, thanked members of the public for rescuing him and ensuring he received prompt medical attention.
“I thank the members of the public who helped me and ensured I received medical attention in time,” he said from his hospital bed.
The violence also left a trail of destruction, with at least three vehicles including one belonging to MP Mutai vandalized by rival groups.
A bus was torched as youths armed with stones and sticks engaged in running battles around the venue.
Despite the violence, the empowerment event later resumed under heavy police security.
Local leaders condemned what they described as rising political intolerance in Kuresoi North, accusing politicians of inciting young people into violent confrontations.
They urged leaders to exercise restraint and called on residents to embrace peaceful political engagement to avert further unrest.
The damaged cars were towed to the local police station.
The clashes come amid growing political tensions in various parts of the country as early political realignments continue ahead of the next electoral cycle.
Police said investigations into the shootings and destruction of property are ongoing. No arrests had been made by Friday evening.
The area is emerging as among those seen as shaky for chaos ahead of the 2027 polls.
