Nairobi residents should brace for major traffic disruptions
on Sunday, as several key roads will remain closed.
The National Police Service has announced temporary road
closures and diversions to ease movement during the ongoing African Nations
Championship (CHAN 2024).
The affected routes are key arteries into the city.
Aerodrome Road will be closed from Madaraka Roundabout to Bunyala Roundabout.
One lane of Lang’ata Road, between Madaraka and Lusaka
roundabouts, will also be shut.
In addition, one lane of Mombasa Road from Lusaka Roundabout
to Bunyala Roundabout will not be accessible.
Motorists heading to the city centre from Mombasa Road have
been advised to use Likoni Road through Enterprise Road near General Motors or take the Southern Bypass via Ole Sereni.
Those approaching from Lang’ata Road are encouraged to
divert through Raila Odinga Road or Muhoho Road via Mbagathi Roundabout.
Thika Superhighway users will also face significant
diversions.
Vehicles leaving Nairobi CBD for Thika, Juja, and Ruiru
should use Kiambu Road or the Northern Bypass.
Police have also announced that there will be a roadblock at
the Ruiru Interchange.
Drivers from Nairobi heading towards Thika Road are advised
to use Kiambu Road at Exit 4, as a roadblock will be mounted at Muthaiga.
Those traveling to Mwiki from Thika Superhighway should
instead use the Ruaka-Baba Ndogo-Lucky Summer-Nairobi River-Mwiki route.
Motorists from Githurai heading into the city are advised to
use Githurai 44 through Kiambu Road.
Those without vehicle access passes but traveling to Moi
International Sports Centre, Kasarani Stadium, should use the service lanes at
Exit 7 and Exit 8.
The National Police Service said additional officers will be
deployed to manage traffic and ensure compliance.
It urged all motorists to cooperate with officers on duty to
guarantee a smooth flow of vehicles.
The police have also warned that stern action will be taken
against anyone violating traffic rules during this period.
The temporary measures are meant to ease congestion and support the safe hosting of CHAN 2024, which has drawn thousands of fans into Nairobi.
