The second phase of the government’s Affordable Housing Programme in South Kanduyi Constituency, Bungoma County, has reached 32% completion, according to Internal Security Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo.

Speaking during an inspection tour, PS Omollo said the project, launched by President William Ruto in August 2024, has advanced to the ground floor slab casting stage. He noted that the slab is expected to be completed within 12 days as part of a broader strategy to maintain momentum and meet delivery timelines.

“Officially launched in August 2024, the project is steadily progressing and currently stands at 32% completion,” Omollo stated.

The housing project is also serving as a major economic driver in the area, currently providing employment to 160 workers, with 80 of them working night shifts to accelerate progress.

Designed to accommodate a mix of income levels, the development comprises four residential blocks totalling 372 housing units.

These are distributed across three housing categories, which are Affordable Housing Units, which has 178 units, including 20 studio apartments, 40 two-bedroom units, and 60 three-bedroom units.

Another category is Social Housing Units, which has 74 units, including 20 one-bedroom, 30 two-bedroom, and 40 three-bedroom units and Market Rate Units which has 120 units, featuring 60 two-bedroom and 80 three-bedroom units.

As of April 30, 2025, the Ministry of Housing reported that more than 500,000 Kenyans had expressed interest in owning units from the first phase. Prices range from Sh640,000 for a studio, Sh960,000 for a one-bedroom, and Sh1.28 million for a two-bedroom unit.

Initially, residents were expected to move in by December 2024. However, the timeline was revised to April 2025 due to legal challenges related to the Housing Levy.

Lands and Housing Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome reiterated the government’s commitment to the housing agenda, stating that over 140,000 units have been constructed so far.

The ministry is targeting 200,000 units annually, with a long-term goal of 1 million units over five years.

“Our mandate is to ensure that Kenyans live in decent houses,” said Wahome, encouraging citizens to apply through the Boma Yangu platform.
