A multi-agency security team has recovered 59 stolen animals following a livestock theft incident in Samburu county.

The operation, conducted on Friday in the Marti area, involved officers from the National Police Service (NPS), the General Service Unit (GSU), and National Police Reservists (NPR).

According to a statement by the NPS, the officers responded swiftly after rustlers reportedly drove away livestock from a herdsman in the Nchalai area of Angata Nanyuki.

Armed with AK-47 rifles, the suspects were intercepted by the security team, triggering a fierce exchange of fire.

The officers subdued the raiders, rescued the herdsman, and recovered all the stolen animals.

The livestock have since been returned to their rightful owner.

The NPS reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the country, stating that police remain on high alert to curb livestock theft and ensure perpetrators are brought to justice.

In a separate incident on May 21, police in Angata Barikoi, Narok county, recovered 11 stolen cattle following a dramatic pursuit that ended near the Miti Mingi Bridge.

A police report indicated that the theft occurred early in the morning, prompting a response by officers from Angata Barikoi police station and Enkoprian police post, who joined the livestock owner and the area assistant chief in a manhunt.

Tracking the rustlers' footprints under the cover of darkness, the team caught up with them near the bridge.

“The officers opened fire, forcing the rustlers to flee and abandon the stolen livestock,” read the report.

All 11 cattle were recovered and returned to their owner.

Police have since increased patrols in the area in response to a rising number of cattle rustling cases.

On May 22, police in Laikipia East also recovered stolen livestock following a confrontation with suspected bandits near Ol-Kinyei Dam.

The suspects, who were armed, fled after being overpowered by the security team, leaving behind the stolen animals.
