Isiolo Governor Abdi Ibrahim Guyo has said the government is working around the clock in coordinating rescue operations for stranded individuals who have been affected by the devastating Isiolo flash floods.
In a statement on Saturday night, the governor noted that a high-level emergency response team led by the county Deputy Governor James Lowasa and other senior officials was deployed to the affected regions immediately following the disaster.
He said ongoing work includes assessing the extent of the damage, coordinating rescue operations, and ensuring that those in need receive the necessary support.
“They are assessing the damage, coordinating response efforts, and offering support on the ground. We are also working with the National Government, Kenya Red Cross, and other partners to deliver timely aid,” Guyo stated.
He expressed his heartfelt sympathies to those who had been affected by the tragic events, reaffirming the commitment of emergency response teams to actively rescue individuals, relocate displaced families, and distribute essential food and supplies.
“We are compiling a detailed damage report to guide relief and recovery efforts. Plans are underway for temporary shelters, medical aid, food support, and infrastructure repairs. Updates will be shared regularly through official channels,” he stated.
He expressed heartfelt gratitude to all responders, volunteers, and partners for their swift and selfless actions, noting that their dedication reflects the true strength and unity of Isiolo.
The Governor's statement comes a day after two people were reported missing after a vehicle they were travelling in was swept by floods in Isiolo on Friday evening.
The vehicle, owned by a local MCA, David Lemantile, was en route to Isiolo from Kipsing and had three occupants on board.
Police Spokesperson Michale Muchiri confirmed the incident and said it happened at the flooded KMC Bridge when the three were crossing to the other side near a police station in Isiolo.
"Boniface managed to escape unhurt through the window. The other two are still missing, and a search is on currently," Muchiri said.
The sudden flash floods experienced following a heavy downpour wreaked havoc in different regions across Isiolo county.
The floods swept through several areas with force, destroying homes, displacing families, leading to death and widespread disruption.
