Past flooding in Nairobi The Water Resources Authority has issued a flood advisory and asked Kenyans to be on the lookout for flash floods and riverine floods in the next five days.
The authority asked Kenyans to take precaution in light of the advisory for their own safety.
“Be vigilant and evacuate to higher safe grounds using safe routes. Do not cross flooded rivers/laggas either on foot or in a vehicle. Be aware of open channels/manholes,” WRA said in a statement to media houses.
The authority said most rivers across the basins in the country are currently flowing at normal levels and some are approaching the flood alarm state.
It added that water levels in the Tana River at Garissa has rapidly risen above the 4m flood alarm threshold in the last 24 hours.
“Tana River at Garissa recorded sharp water level spike in the last 24 hours bringing the levels to alarm state. With the rains currently experienced in mid Tana areas of Kitui, Isiolo, Meru, Tharaka Nithi and Garissa counties, it is expected that the flows will increase significantly,” the authority said.
It named other potential floods hotspot places as low-lying areas of Lake Victoria and Rift Valley basins and the urban areas and advised residents to be on the lookout for riverine floods or flash floods.
The authority stated that the Kenya Metrological Department weather forecast dated March 24, 2025 indicates the likelihood of heavy rainfall over many parts of the country including Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, North Eastern Kenya and Mount Kenya areas between March 25-31, 2025.
“This may lead to rise of river levels and overtopping of banks and flash floods caused by runoffs,” WRA said.
WRA further noted that data from KenGEN indicate that Kiambere dam levels, the last in the Seven Folk Dams cascade was below full supply capacity on March 27 at 5am.
The Meteorological Department, in its forecast for March 25-31 forecast said rainfall is expected to continue over several parts of the country.
“Isolated heavy rainfall events are likely to occur over some parts of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, the South-eastern lowlands, the Coast, North-eastern and North-western Kenya,” it said.
