There was heightened security Tuesday as President William Ruto embarked on a development tour in Nairobi’s Mathare area.

Ruto was in the area as part of the week-long tour of Nairobi County, where he is launching and inspecting various projects.

Accompanied by his deputy, Kithure Kindiki, and other leaders, Ruto’s motorcade made its way through the densely populated slums, making stopovers to interact with residents.

Security was notably tight, with elite officers from the special teams, which include the Counter Assault Team (CAT), prominently positioned next to the president’s car and that of his deputy.

Unlike normal events where these officers remain inside their vehicles on standby, this time, they were actively deployed to reinforce security in the area.

The elite unit, trained to operate in hostile and high-risk environments, worked alongside those from the Presidential Escort Unit (PEU) and the General Service Unit (GSU).

Their aim was to provide a 360-degree protection for the Head of State and respond to any security threats.

When the motorcade came to a halt, the officers swiftly formed a protective circle around the vehicle, ensuring no security lapses.

Ruto was at some point captured walking freely along some routes with some residents while marooned by the officers.

Despite the tense security atmosphere, Ruto’s visit drew large crowds eager to hear from the President and witness ongoing government projects firsthand.

Ruto began the tour Monday by traversing parts of Kamukunji constituency.

He later wrapped up by officially launching the second phase of the Nairobi restoration that will see 18, 000 more youth employed.

Meanwhile, authorities explained Tuesday how and why a mob stormed outside the gate of the State House in Nairobi on Monday afternoon.

During the drama, 12 of the about 300 people were arrested and later released, police said.

This was after they had harassed and robbed some motorists and pedestrians in the about 3 pm drama.

The group was confronted and chased away by a team of elite police as they tried to breach security there to “meet the president for lunch.”

The group consisted mostly of youth from slums near Eastleigh and Industrial Area, Nairobi.

They are alleged to have robbed and harassed motorists and pedestrians outside State House Gate A for several minutes before police arrived to disperse them.
