Two-time 3000m steeplechase Deaflympics champion Lucas Wandia trains at Ulinzi Sports Complex/KSDFWandia, 36, a double Deaflympics gold medallist in the men’s 3000m steeplechase, was among 31 sports personalities feted during this year’s national celebrations on October 20 at Ithokwe Stadium in Kitui County. Sharon Jeptarus was the other deaf athlete honoured by President William Ruto.
Wandia said the recognition made deaf athletes feel valued and motivated them to raise the national flag even higher.
“Now we can see that deaf athletes are being seen and appreciated. It motivates us to continue working hard and contribute to efforts to make our country proud,” said a delighted Wandia at Ulinzi Sports Complex in Nairobi, where he is preparing for the Tokyo Deaflympics.
The former Team Kenya captain will make his fourth appearance at the global championships. He made his debut in 2013 in Sofia, Bulgaria, winning silver, before striking gold in Samsun, Turkey, and successfully defending his title at the 2022 Games in Caxias do Sul, Brazil, clocking 9:25.27.
Wandia attributed his consistency to self-belief and teamwork with his coach.
“I believe I will return home with the gold. I have worked hard and have prepared well. The reason why I always win is that I believe in myself and my coach. With the programme we have developed together, I believe I can do anything,” he said.
Wandia backed his teammates Jacob Kibet and Peter Lagat, along with the rest of Team Kenya, to excel in Tokyo.
“I believe that God will help me and my team to represent Kenya very well. We are hoping to claim all the top three positions. We have the confidence and skills that we have harnessed,” he said.
He appealed to the government to ensure deaf athletes benefit equally from the new state cash reward scheme, announced by President Ruto last month, which awards Sh3 million for gold, Sh2 million for silver and Sh1 million for bronze.
Athletics makes up the largest share of Kenya’s 177-member contingent to Tokyo, alongside teams in handball, swimming, basketball and golf.
