AK launches nationwide registration drive to sanitise athletics ecosystem

The exercise is part of a broader strategy to promote integrity, safety and professionalism.

Athletics Kenya (AK) will on Tuesday kick off a nationwide registration exercise targeting athletics training camps, coaches, medical personnel and all Athlete Support Personnel (ASP), in a bold move to streamline the sport and safeguard athletes across the country.

‎The phased rollout begins in the South Rift region from Tuesday through to Saturday.

‎The exercise will then shift focus to the uniformed forces (Kenya Defence Forces, Kenya Prisons and National Police Service) and AK Nairobi region from August 18 to 22.

Registration will then move to Central (August 25–29), North Eastern (September 1–5), Eastern (September 8–12), Southern (September 15–19), Coast (September 22–26) and Nyanza South (October 6–10).

The process will have stops in Nyanza North (October 13–17), Western (October 20–24), North Rift (October 27–31) and Central Rift (November 3–7).

The exercise is part of a broader strategy to promote integrity, safety and professionalism.

‎"Athletics Kenya is pleased to announce the start of the national registration exercise for all Athletics Training Camps/Groups, as well as coaches, medical personnel and other Athlete Support Personnel (ASP) working with athletes," AK said in a statement.

‎"The registration exercise is a crucial step in our strategy to standardise and regulate the operations of all athletics camps and groups all over the country to ensure a safe, professional and accountable environment for our athletes."

The exercise will require all applicants to present documents relevant to their roles.

‎"To register as Athlete support Personnel (ASP), including coaches, medical staff and other support roles applicants must provide specific documentation," the statement added.

‎Coaches will be required to submit a valid coaching certificate and a police clearance certificate (good conduct). 

‎Medical personnel must provide their practising licence and a police clearance certificate.

‎For other ASPs, including physiotherapists, nutritionists and camp administrators, they must present proof of professional certification and clearance from law enforcement.

‎"Additionally, all foreign nationals, regardless of their roles, must provide a valid work permit," AK added.
