Ahoya to lead Kenyan team to ITF Under-18 show next month

Seline Ahoya will spearhead Kenya’s charge at the two-week ITF Under-18 tourney on May 12-26 at Parklands Sports Club.

Ahoya, who is one of the country’s top performers in the U-14 and U-16 cadres, will make her debut in the senior category and she is relishing the challenge.

“This is my first championship as a senior, and I am looking forward to the event. Playing at home will be an advantage,” she noted.

Ahoya said with a month and a half to the championship, she has stepped up her preparations and hopes to play one or two build up tournaments on home soil.

“My coaching team is looking to play a couple of tournaments to ensure I am in the best possible shape for the event,” she added.

Ahoya will have the company of Stacy Yego, Inaaya Virani and Mercyline Oresha in the girls’ category while Jeff Okuku, Mark Murage and Raqeem Virani will form the boys’ team.

Some of the top tennis players expected for the event are— Great Britain, Spain, Germany, Netherlands and Italy.

Also expected are players from Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Rwanda, Burundi, Zimbabwe and South Africa leading the African charge for the two week tournament Players will earn ranking points for the tournament which will be an added advantage for the Kenyan players, according to Ahoya.

“We have an opportunity to move up the ranking and I am looking forward to the championship.'

Tennis Kenya (TK) executive officer, Nancy Nduku, said she expects a strong showing from the Kenyan contingent in the event.
