But what are right-wing parties and how does their popularity or leadership affect all people in general? Right wingers are social conservatives often going against the mainstream as they hold on to neoliberal, conservative and fascist ideologies. When these ideologies lean a little too far right, you end up with neo-nazis.
Right wingers are often against abortion, gay marriages and immigration. They place the idea of a collective nationalism before anything else. Right wingers often speak loudly against liberal ideas, yet they embrace other practices that make the irony laughable.
For instance, US Presidents Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance are both married to immigrants or children of immigrants. Meanwhile, Germany's far-right leader, Alice Weidel, is a lesbian woman married to a woman of Sri Lankan heritage.
The irony of right-wing implementalists who cannot fail but to embrace certain ‘progressive’ ideologies themselves is patently absurd. How does one embrace a sexual orientation that right wingers deem to be ungodly but be very vocal about the sinfulness of abortions at the same time? If you choose to be a conservative, then wouldn't it be better to stay clear within the guidelines of those beliefs?
I wonder what it is like for people like Melania Trump and Usha Vance, who are products of migration to America, to watch other immigrants of similar backgrounds be deported back to their countries in shackles. What if they were not married to people from the current government and another government shackled them? They are immigrants, after all. As we have seen, the Trump government has not been sparing the legal from the illegal migrants. As long as you are a migrant, your future in America is hanging by a thread.
As we know, America is currently led by a right-wing government. Similar governments in Europe include Germany, Italy, Sweden, Finland, Hungary and Switzerland. However, right-wing parties are currently gaining so much momentum that most of them are the current oppositions in their respective countries.
So, what does right-wing popularity have to do with us as Africans or third-world countries? Well, as we have seen for the last couple of months since Trump took office, a lot of conservative ideas are against the interests of others. No foreign aid, no immigration, no trade deals. Since the world is watching Trump’s antics unfold, it is only a matter of time before other countries follow suit. Meaning more deportations and more disadvantages in terms of trade and funding.
As Trump and most of Europe are about to find out the hard way, the consequences of such actions are severe for both parties. Honest, hard-working immigrants help build up these superpower economies by providing the manpower to keep their systems running efficiently. Trade agreements control the prices of commodities and afford consumers a wide variety of products from across the globe.
Moreover, the ideology of ‘us versus them’ is a dangerous one. It's only one slippery slope away from fascist, hierarchical ideas of the powerful destroying the weak. The far-right party of France has openly stated that they wish to colonise parts of Africa all over. Right-wing ideologies spread fear, encourage white supremacism and clearly threaten the sovereignty of other countries. If this keeps up, it’s only a matter of time before wars are declared and we are all caught in the middle.
