Between June and now, scores of young men and women have been shot and killed, and thousands maimed. They will never be the same again.

Their dreams have been shattered.

The police, urged on recklessly by politicians, have declared war on the youth. Hospitals are weighed down by emergencies that ought not to have been the case.

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja must remember that the police have no business taking orders from politicians.

The police officers who have shot and killed unarmed protestors will be aware that they are now fighting lonely, long and expensive legal fights while the politicians who egged them on with empty promises of protection are enjoying their lives and pursuing their dreams.

The police operate in a clear legal space and must ignore exhortations from dense politicians who believe that they have power above the constitution.

As for President William Ruto, our advice is for him to withdraw the “shoot the legs” order and let the police act within the law.

The blood and tears in every corner of Kenya must be atoned.

We add our voice to the appeals already made by politicians that compensation to the families of the dead and maimed must be the right thing to do.
