In Summary

  • A large number of the institutions that have fallen foul of the law happen to be faith-based colleges either backed by a church or sponsored by a religious organisation.
  • The college administrators know only too well that they cannot offer a degree certificate in any field of knowledge without the approval of the CUE.

The Commission for University Education has put out a list of 15 universities and colleges that hand out degree certificates that for all intents and purposes are worthless paper.

The information will without doubt be helpful to students, guardians and even the teaching fraternity hired to teach the courses that turn out to be unapproved.

Millions are poured into the colleges in the name of tuition cash, largely from financially vulnerable homes with the hope that the education certificate is an investment that could lift the life standards by landing the young graduates an opportunity in the very bleak job market.

A large number of the institutions that have fallen foul of the law happen to be faith-based colleges either backed by a church or sponsored by a religious organisation.

The college administrators know only too well that they cannot offer a degree certificate in any field of knowledge without the approval of the CUE.

But again we live in Kenya, a country where an individual can start any scheme right under the noses of the police so long as they have the right connections.

The CUE must assure the nation, because we live in a country in which a college degree bestows a huge sense of pride on the recipient, that they have the mechanism to stamp out such vice and the culprits punished in accordance with the law.

All the degrees offered by the colleges must be revoked.
