Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has announced that the government plans to roll out a national identity card tracking system.
According to Murkomen, the system will enable Kenyans to keep track of the status of their applications through the new post-issuance ID tracking system.
Speaking on the ongoing reforms in the ID registration process, he said the system will provide updates via SMS notifications or an online platform.
“As part of our continued efforts to enhance transparency and efficiency in the ID registration process, I will soon be launching the post-issuance ID tracking system,” Murkomen said.
He said that this would reduce the long wait times and uncertainty for applicants.
The Interior CS explained that the initiative aims to improve customer experience and make government services more accessible.
“We aim to reduce waiting time and eliminate uncertainty in the application process, ensuring that Kenyans have access to updates on their applications.”
Currently, there is no system to help one track the progress of their ID applications. Once the application process is complete one visits the application centre after some time to see if the ID has been printed and ready for collection.
Murkomen also announced the government’s plan to introduce a national digital identity management system, which will include virtual IDs and digital wallets.
He said the digital wallets would allow Kenyans to store their identification documents on smartphones and integrate with various services, including government platforms, payment systems, and digital signatures.
“The digital wallet will be integrated with a wide range of services, providing access to government platforms, payment systems, and even digital signatures,” he said.
Murkomen was in Nakuru County for the official rollout of the National Mobile Registration Outreach Programme.
He said the initiative targets rural villages, schools, and urban areas, ensuring that no Kenyan is left behind in the registration process.
“The mobile registration outreach program we are launching today is another key part of this effort. By bringing services directly to the people, we aim to reach every corner of the country," he said.
