Renowned lawyer and scholar Professor Makau Mutua has dismissed claims that he met former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, terming the reports false.

Social media reports on Friday alleged that Mutua met Gachagua at Sarvid Gardens in Kiambu, sparking widespread speculation.

Taking to his X (formerly Twitter) page, Mutua clarified that he had neither met Gachagua nor former Attorney General Githu Muigai at the restaurant, contrary to the rumours.

“Just to set the record straight. I met neither Gachagua nor former AG Githu Muigai at Sarvid Gardens yesterday. I’ve never met Gachagua and have no such plans,” Mutua wrote.

However, he confirmed that he was at the establishment, but only to catch up with his long-time friend, Senior Counsel Paul Muite, over Nyama Choma.

He also took a swipe at those spreading the speculation, stating, “Too many idle people!”

Mutua, a key strategist in former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s camp, played a central role in Odinga’s African Union Commission chairperson bid.

Mutua travelled with Raila across the continent as the ODM boss sought support from African presidents for his failed AUC bid.

He was also part of Raila’s inner circle during his unsuccessful 2022 presidential campaign and serves as one of the former prime minister's advisors.

His statement comes amid heightened political activity, with alliances and behind-the-scenes meetings fueling speculation.

Meanwhile, Gachagua has intensified his engagement with various political players at his Wamunyoro residence, as he builds momentum for 2027.

He is reportedly working with Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa, and PLP party leader Martha Karua as he strengthens his political base.

Given Mutua’s strong criticism of the Kenya Kwanza administration and his close ties to Raila, the rumored meeting had raised eyebrows.

His clarification seeks to put an end to the speculation, though political observers note that such claims often fuel intrigue in Kenya’s ever-evolving political landscape.
