Heavy rains pound different parts of country

The week has begun with heavy rains in different parts of the country.

The rains, which started on Sunday evening, have caused traffic snarl-ups in Nairobi and led to flooding that has affected businesses.

On Saturday, the Kenya Meteorological Department warned of heavy rainfall lasting from Sunday evening to Tuesday.

Met warned that the conditions were not only going to cause flash floods but also poor visibility.

Kenya Met Director David Gikungu said the rains are likely to persist until Tuesday, 9pm.

The weatherman predicted up to 30mm of rainfall in some regions across the country.

Gikungu said heavy rainfall of more than 20mm in 24 hours is expected in parts of the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi area and southeastern lowlands.

''The heavy rainfall is likely to intensify to more than 30mm in 24 hours and spread to part of northwestern Kenya on March 10, 2025. It is projected to reduce in intensity from March 11, 2025,” he added.

Counties expected to experience heavy rainfall include Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Homabay, Siaya, Migori, Busia, Kisumu, Kisii, Nyamira, Nandi, Kakamega and Vihiga. 

Others are Bungoma, Baringo, Nakuru, Trans-Nzoia, Uasin-Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, West-Pokot, Turkana, Marsabit, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Nairobi, Machakos and Kajiado. 

Gikungu urged residents in the areas to stay safe, advising them not to shelter under trees and near grilled windows to minimise exposure to lightning strikes.

He stated that updates would be provided promptly if there were any changes.

Gikungu urged other agencies to remain on high alert for emergency response and any arising situations.

These include the National Intelligence Service, Kenya Red Cross Society, Kenya Maritime Authority, Kenya Ports Authority, Kenya Airports Authority, National Disaster Operations Centre, National Disaster Management Unit, media, government ministries, the Council of Governors and County Directors of Meteorological Services.
