The Kenya Pipeline Company has cultivated more than just a successful women's volleyball team; it has nurtured a continental powerhouse.
For more than 40 years, KPC's strategic and consistent investment in the Oilers has transcended mere sponsorship. It has been a transformative force, sculpting a team that consistently competes at the highest levels of African volleyball.
This commitment has not only elevated the Oilers but has also contributed significantly to the growth and recognition of women's volleyball in Kenya and across the continent.
This is the story of that enduring legacy, a testament to the power of corporate vision and unwavering support.
KPC managing director Joe Sang says the Oilers' success is not accidental. It's the direct result of a carefully planned and executed strategy, fuelled by more than four decades of unwavering belief in the team's potential.
From the very beginning, KPC recognised the value of volleyball not just as a sport but also a powerful platform for social impact and a means to amplify the company's brand.
This long-term perspective, he says, has been crucial in building the Oilers into the formidable force they are today.
“Sports are very important to us. For more than 40 years, we have made investments in volleyball,” Sang said.
“To spread the word about what we do, we use the volleyball team as our brand ambassador.”
This philosophy has been the cornerstone of the Oilers' journey. It has fostered an environment where talent can flourish, where dedication is rewarded and where the pursuit of excellence is paramount. The results are undeniable.
The Oilers' consistent presence among the top contenders in continental championships, including their impressive performances in recent years, is a testament to the efficacy of KPC's long-term investment.
HOLISTIC APPROACH
KPC's support goes beyond simply providing funds. It encompasses a holistic approach to team development.
This includes infrastructure development, with KPC investing in training facilities and equipment, creating a professional environment that allows the Oilers to hone their skills. Recognising the importance of nurturing future talent, KPC supports programmes that identify and develop young volleyball players, ensuring a pipeline of skilled athletes for the Oilers.
The company's investment also ensures that the Oilers have access to experienced and qualified coaches, as well as the necessary technical and medical support to maximise their performance.
Furthermore, KPC facilitates opportunities for the Oilers to compete in international tournaments, providing them with invaluable experience and exposure to different playing styles.
Crucially, KPC prioritises the well-being of its athletes, providing support in areas such as education, healthcare and career development, ensuring that they can thrive both on and off the court.
“We have invested in volleyball because it’s one of the disciplines that put Kenya on the map in Africa and globally,” Sang stated in a recent feature on KPC’s official website.
“We are proud that our team has seasoned national players like Noel Murambi and Leonida Kasaya.”
JOURNEY TO SUCCESS
The Oilers' journey to becoming a continental giant has been marked by both triumphs and challenges. They have faced formidable opponents, overcome setbacks and consistently demonstrated resilience and determination.
The team's success is a testament to the dedication of the players, the strategic acumen of the coaching staff and the unwavering support of KPC.
The Oilers' rise to prominence is also attributed to the exceptional talent within their ranks and the strategic guidance of their coaches. The team boasts a blend of seasoned veterans and promising young stars, creating a dynamic and formidable force on the court.
Players like Leonida Kasaya and Trizah Atuka have been instrumental in the Oilers' success. Their experience, skill and leadership provide a strong foundation for the team.
The emergence of talented young players such as Faith Imodia and Marian Sokoiyo has added a new dimension to the Oilers' game, ensuring a bright future for the team.
The strategic vision and tactical expertise of coaches like Geoffrey Omondi have been crucial in shaping the Oilers' playing style and maximising their potential.
Coach Omondi says it is important to have continuous improvement and to adapt to the ever-evolving landscape of volleyball.
He instils a culture of hard work, discipline and teamwork, fostering an environment where players can thrive and reach their full potential.
"There is a lot of work to be done still but we are not far off. We've gone back to the drawing board to ensure that we rectify all the weak spots in the team so that come next year in the next championship, we can play better," Omondi said.
The dedication of the players and the coaching staff is matched by the unwavering support of KPC, creating a powerful synergy that drives the Oilers' success.
The path to becoming a continental giant is not always smooth. The Oilers have faced their share of challenges, including tough losses and fierce competition. However, their resilience and determination have allowed them to overcome these obstacles and emerge stronger.
CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT
Captain Gladys Ekaru, who joined the club in 2019, speaks to this resilience, acknowledging the team's unwavering commitment to their goals.
“We didn't achieve our target but we are still working hard to ensure we meet our goal in future competitions,” she said, reflecting the collective ambition that drives the Oilers forward.
The players' mental fortitude, coupled with the consistent support of KPC, has been instrumental in their ability to bounce back from setbacks and maintain their focus on achieving their objectives.
Veteran Noel Murambi termed the team’s finish as runners-up in the African Women's Volleyball Championship last month a learning curve.
"Abuja was nice because the tournament started well but we didn't achieve what we were aiming for because we had hoped for a gold but settled for silver," she said.
"Nonetheless, we gained a good measure of experience and learned invaluable lessons from the challenges posed by other teams.
“We are working on our shortfalls to ensure that we will be in a better position to secure a gold medal in the next club championship."
Fellow veteran Agrippina Kundu, who joined the Oilers in 2012, called for renewed commitment and a relentless pursuit of excellence.
"We must put in more effort and make sure we defeat Zamalek in the upcoming tournament,” she said.
“Because they kept us from making it to the finals; they were the hardest team we faced."
This mindset of continuous improvement, instilled in the team through a culture of mentorship and support, is essential for the Oilers as they continue their quest for continental dominance.
INSPIRING WOMEN
The impact of KPC's investment extends beyond the volleyball court. The Oilers have become role models for aspiring young athletes, particularly women, in Kenya and across Africa. Their success demonstrates the power of dedication, hard work and perseverance, inspiring others to pursue their dreams.
By supporting women's sports, KPC is contributing to a more equitable and inclusive society. They are empowering women to achieve their full potential, challenging stereotypes and promoting gender equality. This commitment to social responsibility is an integral part of KPC's legacy.
The Oilers' journey is far from over. With the continued support of KPC, they are poised to achieve even greater heights. Coach Omondi's emphasis on ongoing development and the players' unwavering determination ensure that the team remains a force to be reckoned with on the continental stage.
"There is a lot of work to be done still, but we are not far off. We've gone back to the drawing board to rectify weak spots," Omondi said, underscoring the team's commitment to continuous improvement.
