Kenya Power has advised electricity consumers to purchase tokens in advance ahead of a scheduled M-Pesa system upgrade that will temporarily disrupt its Paybill services on Monday, September 22, 2025.

Giant telecommunications Safaricom PLC had earlier announced a planned M-Pesa system upgrade scheduled to take place from 12:30 am to 3:30 am, during which all M-Pesa services, including airtime purchase, will be temporarily unavailable.

In a Saturday alert, the utility firm announced that several services would be unavailable during the maintenance window.

"During this period, Kenya Power paybill numbers, including 888880 for token purchase and 888888 for postpaid bill payments, will not be available," the notice read.

The company cautioned consumers that top up their electricity accounts via M-PESA could face delays if they attempt to make transactions during the outage.

“We encourage you to purchase their electricity tokens in advance before the scheduled maintenance to avoid any inconvenience,” the statement said.

The firm assured consumers that they can still access its services through a range of alternative channels.

These include Airtel Money and several banks such as DTB Bank, NCBA Bank, Family Bank, Co-operative Bank, KCB, I&M Bank, National Bank of Kenya, and Equity Bank, either through their USSD codes or smartphone applications.

It shared links to its official social media pages, where customers can get further information and updates during the maintenance period.

Safaricom had said the three-hour maintenance window is intended to enhance service reliability, security, and performance across the M-Pesa platform.

“For 18 years, M-Pesa has continued to transform lives across Kenya, connecting you, our customers, to opportunities every day. To support this and meet our promise to offer always-on, safe, secure, and worry-free financial products and services, we will be conducting a scheduled system upgrade on Monday, September 22, 2025, from 12:30 am to 3:30 am,” Safaricom said.

The company emphasised that the timing of the upgrade has been carefully selected to minimise disruption and apologised in advance for any inconvenience caused.
