The race to deliver Kenya's flagship Talanta Stadium has reached a key milestone after newly planted Bermuda grass began germinating across the playing surface, signalling progress on one of the final major components of the 60,000-seater facility.

Sports Kenya announced that its technical team had conducted the third inspection of the stadium's pitch and noted encouraging growth of the grass seeded early last month.

The inspection found healthy germination across large sections of the playing surface, a development that officials say keeps the project on track as construction enters the final stretch.

"The inspection noted encouraging grass germination across the pitch," Sports Kenya said in a statement following the assessment.

Bermuda grass is widely used in elite football stadiums around the world because of its durability, rapid recovery and ability to withstand heavy usage throughout the season.

The grass is particularly suited to warm climates and is commonly found in international-standard sports facilities.

The technical team recommended further fertiliser application, weed management and adjustments to the irrigation system to promote uniform growth and ensure the pitch develops into a world-class playing surface.

The latest milestone comes as much of the stadium's major construction work has already been completed, shifting focus to finishing works and operational readiness.

Thousands of seats have already been installed throughout the stadium, including premium seating in VIP and VVIP sections, giving the venue the appearance of a near-complete international arena.

Installation of LED advertising boards, hospitality suites and executive skyboxes has also advanced significantly as the government races to prepare the facility for future continental tournaments.

The stadium's imposing roof canopy and structural framework are already in place, while floodlighting systems, broadcast infrastructure and key electrical installations are at advanced stages of completion.

With the superstructure largely complete, attention has increasingly turned to the playing surface, which remains the heart of any football venue.

Sports turf experts consider the germination stage one of the most important phases in pitch development.

The process determines the density, uniformity and long-term durability of the grass, factors that ultimately affect playing quality and compliance with international standards.

According to Sports Kenya, continuous monitoring of the turf will be undertaken in the coming weeks to ensure proper growth and development.

The next phase will involve strengthening the root system, increasing turf density and maintaining consistent growth across all sections of the field before the surface can be certified for competitive football.

The successful establishment of the pitch is particularly important as Kenya prepares to host major international sporting events – AFCON.

Once complete, Talanta Stadium is expected to become one of the country's premier sporting facilities, significantly boosting Kenya's capacity to host international matches and tournaments.

The construction of the facility commenced in early 2024, with the handover initially set for March 2026.

This was, however, rescheduled.

The venue is a central pillar in the country's sports infrastructure programme and is expected to complement other facilities earmarked for regional and continental competitions.
