The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has charged a 22-year-old madrasa teacher in Lamu with defiling a four-year-old girl.
According to a statement issued by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) on Friday, the suspect was arraigned before the Lamu Law Courts, where he faced a principal charge of defilement.
"The accused was arraigned before the Lamu Law Courts, where he faced charges of defilement contrary to Section 8(1), as read with Section 8(4) of the Sexual Offences Act No. 3 of 2006," the ODPP wrote.
He also faced an alternative count of committing an indecent act with a child.
The court heard that the offence was allegedly committed in September 2025.
Appearing before Principal Magistrate Peter Wasike, the accused denied both charges.
Through his lawyer, the man applied for release on reasonable bond terms.
However, prosecution counsel opposed the application, arguing that releasing the accused at this stage would endanger the integrity of ongoing investigations and risk interference with key witnesses.
The court directed the Probation and Aftercare Services to prepare and file a pre-bail report before making a determination on bond.
In the meantime, the accused will remain in custody at Hindi G.K. Prison. The matter will be mentioned again on 30 September 2025.
The ODPP, in its statement tagged HakiNAUsawa, reaffirmed its commitment to pursue justice for victims of sexual offences, especially minors.
This case comes a day after a 13-year-old girl’s courage to speak out against her own father brought justice after the Kibera Law Courts on Thursday handed him a life sentence for defilement.
The 36-year-old man, whose identity cannot be revealed to protect the child, was found guilty of repeatedly defiling the minor.
He was also found guilty of cruelty for assaulting the young girl with a knife and pinching her ears with pegs.
For this, he was given an additional five-year sentence, which will remain in abeyance while he serves life in prison.
The ordeal came to light only after the girl was rescued and placed in a children’s home.
