Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) has warned customers against falling victim to fraudulent groups and individuals posing as its agents online, flagging a fake Facebook group that has been duping unsuspecting members of the public.
In a statement released on its verified social media platforms, the utility firm reiterated that customers should only engage with KPLC through official and secure channels.
These include X (formerly Twitter) via @KenyaPower_Care, Facebook at Kenya Power Care, WhatsApp on 0702 977 977, the USSD code *977#, SMS number 97771, and email at [email protected]
The company emphasised that these are the only safe avenues for bill inquiries, outage reports, new connections, and other service requests.
Customers were strongly cautioned against sharing personal details such as PINs, banking information, or M-Pesa credentials with anyone claiming to represent Kenya Power.
“Kenya Power will never ask for your PIN, bank, or M-Pesa details. We’ll never ask you to send money to personal numbers. Only use our official payment channels,” the company stated.
The reminder comes amid a surge in scams where fraudsters, masquerading as KPLC staff, have conned customers into sending money or disclosing sensitive information.
Some victims have reported financial losses after engaging with fake accounts and groups on social media.
KPLC said it is intensifying customer education campaigns to protect consumers and reinforce trust.
The company urged members of the public to remain vigilant, report suspicious activity, and always verify the authenticity of any communication before taking action.
“Stay safe. Stay connected,” the firm added, promoting awareness through hashtags #KPLCVerified and #Usichezwe.
The utility company said the crackdown on impostors is part of a broader effort to safeguard customers while ensuring uninterrupted, reliable electricity supply across the country.
