On the Radar

The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) and development partners, will inaugurate an expanded polio laboratory.

The inauguration will commence at 9 am at KEMRI headquarters in Nairobi.

Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale will be among the guests who will give remarks at the meeting.

The facility, which serves as both the National and Inter-country Reference Laboratory, supports Kenya and neighbouring countries—Somalia, Djibouti, Eritrea, and Comoros—in polio diagnostics and surveillance.

With this expansion, the laboratory is expected to significantly strengthen in-country genomic sequencing, reduce turnaround times for outbreak detection, and enhance regional health security.

The expanded polio laboratory is a legacy project that will not only accelerate polio eradication but also strengthen genomic surveillance of other epidemic and pandemic threats, such as MPOX, measles, rubella, and emerging enteric viruses.
