Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has attributed most killings in Kisii County to land disputes, dismissing claims that witchcraft accusations are the main cause.

Speaking during the 39th Jukwa la Usalama forum held in Kisii, Murkomen emphasised that the platform allows communities to engage directly with government officials on security concerns affecting them.

“Kisii County reports one of the highest numbers of murder cases in the country,” he said, noting that the statistics underscore the importance of Jukwa la Usalama in identifying and addressing the root causes of insecurity.

Murkomen observed that many killings, particularly those involving elderly persons, are often linked to alleged witchcraft. He clarified that such claims are often a pretext, with the real motive being land inheritance.

“You report many cases of older persons being killed in the name of witchcraft. The reality is that witchcraft is just an excuse. The truth is that young people are eliminating their elders to quickly inherit land,” he said.

He stressed that land inheritance pressures remain the main contributor to violence in the county. “Almost every year, an elderly person is killed in Kisii under the guise of being a witch. This pressure is translating into killings,” he added.

To address the issue, Murkomen announced plans to engage the Ministry of Lands on long-term solutions, including land consolidation and improved land management.

On illicit alcohol and drug operations, Murkomen said measures are underway to eliminate the trade, highlighting a notorious peddler with roots in Kisii, and emphasising that no one is untouchable.

Regarding the upcoming by-elections, he assured that learning in schools and national exams will not be disrupted during campaigns or voting. Murkomen also commented on a Migori OCS who attended Jukwaa while intoxicated, saying that action will be taken, and the officer will receive help if needed.
