President William Ruto's senior constitutional affairs adviser Makau Mutua has said Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna should step down as the ODM Secretary-General.

In a post on X on Wednesday, Mutua said Sifuna’s position in the party had become “untenable” and the honorable thing to do would be to resign.

“My good learned friend and Senator Edwin Sifuna appears to be in an untenable position as SG of The ODM party,” Mutua said.

“It seems to me that the honorable thing for him to do if he’s a man of principle is to resign from his post, which almost never happens in Kenya, unless one is sacked.”

Mutua did not elaborate on what makes Sifuna’s position untenable.

This comes a day after Sifuna skipped the first broad-based parliamentary group meeting held on Monday.

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino and Saboti MP Caleb Amisi were also absent.

The latter, however, said he had sent an apology, citing ongoing examinations.

Sifuna and Owino are leading a disgruntled camp.

The splinter group has already declared its intentions to run for key Nairobi seats in 2027, with Sifuna set to defend his senatorial seat and Owino to run for governor.

Sifuna also met with Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka on August 14, on the sidelines of the Law Society of Kenya's annual conference in Kwale county, sparking debate.

Following the meeting, Kalonzo hinted at a potential political alliance as the country gears up for the 2027 general election.

"Had a productive chat with Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna. Exchanged contacts. I have a feeling this connection could lead to some exciting things," he said.

Earlier on, Sifuna had reaffirmed his recognition of Kalonzo as a principal in the Azimio la Umoja–One Kenya Coalition Party during an event in Ukambani.

Sifuna has been a critic of the Raila Odinga and President William Ruto broad-based government.
