President William Ruto has nominated John Cox Lorionokou as Registrar of Political Parties.

Acting on recommendations from the Public Service Commission, the President has also nominated Agatha Wanjiku Wahome as the Assistant Registrar.

In a statement, State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohamed said Ruto has also forwarded the name of Claris Awour Onganga to the National Assembly for consideration and approval as the chairperson of the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights.

Lorionokou's nomination follows the exit of Anne Nderitu who resigned from the role following her appointment as a commissioner at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

Nderitu had led the institution since 2018, when she was appointed in an acting capacity by former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

In 2020, she was formally appointed Registrar following a competitive recruitment process and parliamentary vetting.

The Public Service Commission (PSC) has advertised the post on July 15, a day after she quit.

PS said the interested applicants must be holders of a degree from a recognised university in Kenya and demonstrate proven knowledge in finance, management, political science, law, governance, or public administration.

Additionally, candidates were required to have at least 15 years of post-qualification experience in the relevant fields, along with a record of high moral character and integrity.

For the assistant registrar's post, PSC said the holder must have a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience.

Meanwhile, the position of chairperson for the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) fell vacant following the death of Roseline Odhiambo Odede in January.

A selection panel appointed by President Ruto led the search for her replacement from April, when the panel was gazetted.

Recently, President Ruto nominated Duncan Ojwang for the position, but he declined the nomination.

The selection panel went back to the drawing board.

The position requires specific qualifications, including at least 15 years of experience in law and human rights, a Kenyan university degree, and adherence to Chapter Six of the Constitution.
