Kenya’s Deputy High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Bishop Dr. Joseph Warui, met Robbie Lyle, founder and CEO of Arsenal Fan TV (AFTV), to explore ways of amplifying African football's global visibility.
Warui described their discussion as a key step in addressing the long-standing underrepresentation of African football in global sports media.
He commended Lyle’s dedication to sharing authentic African football stories, noting that Africa possesses the passion, skill and energy to attract a worldwide following, much like Europe’s elite leagues.
“Football is a unifying force and a powerful economic driver. What African football needs is visibility and Robbie’s platform can play a significant role in shifting global perceptions,” said Ambassador Warui.
During the meeting, Lyle emphasised the need for African leagues and players to receive the same media attention as their European counterparts.
“There is real talent and passion in Africa,” he said.
“What I saw in Kenya convinced me that the world is missing out on something special.”
Lyle noted that digital platforms provide an unprecedented opportunity to showcase African stories, particularly through football.
He described the sport as a universal language that connects communities around the world.
The pair also discussed the upcoming African Digital Economy Summit in Nairobi.
The summit will convene representatives from leading digital platforms such as YouTube and TikTok to explore how African content creators can monetize their work, build global audiences, and contribute to Africa’s digital transformation.
“Social media is more than just entertainment; it’s a powerful economic tool. Africa must not be left behind in the global digital economy,” Warui added.
The meeting, held in London on Tuesday, August 12, comes in the wake of Lyle’s recent visit to Kenya in May, where he immersed himself in the country’s vibrant football culture.
During his trip, Lyle joined thousands of Arsenal fans at an electrifying Arsenal watch party at Konqa254 entertainment joint in Nairobi.
He also held talks with Sports CS Salim Mvurya, Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti and Football Kenya Federation (FKF) president Hussein Mohammed on grassroots and women’s football development.
With more than 1.7 million subscribers and nearly 1.7 billion views, AFTV has become a global media powerhouse.
