A sombre mood hangs over the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital morgue, where families have gathered to collect the bodies of their loved ones following a tragic road accident along the Kisumu-Kakamega highway.
The August 8 crash claimed 26 lives. As of now, 22 of the bodies have been confirmed to be among those lying at the facility’s morgue.
Most of the victims hail from the Nyakach Koguta area, and their families have arrived to begin the painful process of identification and transport for burial.
The accident is among the deadliest in the region, and it has left an entire community in mourning.
Grieving relatives could be seen comforting each other, some still in disbelief at the sudden loss of life.
The accident occurred at the Coptic roundabout, just outside Kisumu City, when a school bus belonging to AIC Naki High School reportedly lost control, veered off the road, and plunged into a ditch.
The victims from Nyakach were largely relatives and friends returning from the funeral of a family member in Nyahera area.
Families will transport the bodies to their respective homes for night vigils before returning them to Naki Primary School on Saturday morning for a joint funeral service, before families proceed to bury their loved ones.
