The hearing into the case of blogger Ndiang’ui Kinyagia begins today, following a series of events that started when officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) reportedly visited his home on June 21.
According to his family, the officers arrived without clear reasons, prompting fears of an arrest linked to Ndiangui’s critical social media posts.
Shortly after, the blogger went missing, sparking concern from relatives and prompting them to file a habeas corpus petition seeking his production in court.
In response, the DCI denied arresting or detaining him, stating that he was merely a person of interest due to alleged inflammatory content posted online.
The mystery of his whereabouts deepened until Ndiang’ui resurfaced in court on July 3, with the family’s lawyer, Wahome Thuku, stating that he had gone into hiding for his own safety after learning he was being pursued.
The court subsequently barred police from arresting him and allowed him to present himself for questioning under protection orders.
In another case, Shelmith Karungri and Gathii Irungu, the two co-accused alongside Juja MP George Koimburi, are expected to appear today before Milimani Senior Principal Magistrate Robinson Ondieki.
They will be mentioned in a land fraud case.
Earlier this year, they faced several charges, including conspiracy to defraud, obtaining land registration through false pretences, and uttering false documents concerning a 1.31-hectare Juja plot valued at approximately Sh10 million at the Thika District Land Registry.
Notably, a court recently issued an arrest warrant against MP Koimburi following his failure to appear for a plea-taking session on fresh charges of conspiring to defeat justice and giving false information, related to what prosecutors termed as a staged abduction in May 2025.
Senior Principal Magistrate Ben Mark Ekhubi ordered his
arrest on July 16, 2025, along with two co-accused, Peter Kiratu and Njuguna, also known as Njugush, after they failed to appear in court.
The co-accused are alleged to have conspired to stage-manage the abduction of the lawmaker to prevent his arrest and arraignment over the land fraud charges filed by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).
