Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has vowed to closely monitor the ongoing investigation into the death of Albert Ojwang, who died in police custody under suspicious circumstances.

Speaking during Ojwang’s funeral at Nyawango Primary School, Wanga emphasised the need for accountability and justice, calling for those responsible to face the full force of the law.

“We will be following the death of Albert closely. Those police who have been charged in court, we will follow up to see that they are charged with murder and convicted to hang,” she declared.

Ojwang was arrested on June 7 at his home in Kakoth and taken to Nairobi Central Police Station, where he died a day later while in custody.

Several police officers and civilians have since been detained as investigations continue.

Wanga stressed that justice must not only be done but also be seen to be done, warning that delays would only deepen the public’s mistrust in the justice system.

"Justice must not just be done, justice must be seen to be done. Justice delayed is justice denied," she said.

She also reminded police of their noble duty, urging them to ensure they, at times, operate within the law and the constitution.

President William Ruto has since condemned the incident and called for a “swift, transparent, and credible investigation” into both Ojwang’s death and the public unrest that followed.

On Thursday, July 3, tensions escalated at Ojwang's hometown as the body arrived.

Hundreds of mourners, including students from the neighbouring Mawego Polytechnic, grabbed the casket and marched it to Mawego Police Station, where he was initially booked.

The confrontation ended with part of the station being set ablaze.

Police are yet to comment on the incident.

Wanga, in her address, came to the defence of the students, distancing them from accusations of involvement in the arson.

The county boss further reiterated her commitment to supporting the family.

"Albert’s legacy of service and kindness will not be forgotten, and we stand together in demanding accountability and closure for this tragic loss," she said.

Wanga also conveyed condolence messages from President William Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

Suba North MP Millie Odhiambo and her Embakasi East Babu Owino were present.
