Ipoa update on Albert Ojwang's probe: 20 police officers have recorded statements

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (Ipoa) has confirmed that 20 police officers, including senior officials, have recorded statements in connection with the ongoing investigation into the death of Albert Ojwang’.

Among them is Central Police Station Deputy Officer Commanding Station (OCS), Inspector Samuel Ng’ang’a, who was arrested on Tuesday, June 17, 2025.

He is currently being held at Muthaiga Police Station.

Two officers—Deputy OCS Samson Talaam and Police Constable James Mukhwana—have already been arraigned in court.

Several civilians have also appeared in court in connection to the case.

They include Kelvin Mutisya Mutava, who is accused of tampering with CCTV footage, and three others—Brian Mwaniki Njue, Collins Karani, and Gin Ammitou—who were inmates at the station on the day Ojwang’ died.

Ipoa stated that its investigating officer sought court orders to detain the suspects longer in order to complete investigations.

The Authority has also summoned Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat to appear before its investigations team to record a statement.

To support the inquiry, Ipoa has filed a request with mobile service providers to obtain call data for several individuals of interest.

Meanwhile, digital video recordings from Central Police Station and biological evidence sent to the Government Chemist are under forensic analysis.

Ipoa said it is working closely with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions and expects to finalise the investigation file with charges recommended against multiple suspects by early next week.

The Authority has urged the public to remain calm and assured Kenyans that no one will be spared if found culpable.
