The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has summoned Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat in connection with the ongoing investigation into the death of teacher and social media influencer Albert Ojwang.
"Further, having found basis, Ipoa has issued a summons to the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Eliud Lagat to appear before the authority’s investigations team to record a statement," Ipoa chairperson Isaack Hassan said in a statement on Wednesday.
Further, Ipoa said it has made a miscellaneous application to mobile service providers to supply it with mobile phone data for persons of interest in the probe.
"To help in the investigations into the murder of Mr. Ojwang’. Further, the seized DVR footage from Central Police Station and biological samples supplied to the Government Chemist are currently under analysis," Ipoa said.
The summons comes in after DIG Lagat stepped aside pending investigations into the death of Albert Ojwang.
In a statement dated June 16, 2025, Lagat said the move was in “good and conscious thought” of his role and responsibilities.
He cited the ongoing investigations into Ojwang’s death as the reason for temporarily vacating office.
“I have today opted to step aside... pending completion of investigations,” he stated.
Ojwang’ died while in custody at Central Police Station, Nairobi, following his arrest on June 7, 2025.
His death has triggered public outrage and nationwide protests, with demonstrators demanding accountability from the police.
Lagat is said to have filed the original complaint that led to Ojwang’s arrest, accusing him of publishing false and malicious information.
The summons is part of a broader probe into alleged police misconduct surrounding Ojwang’s death.
Ipoa has already secured extended custody of Central Police Station OCS Samson Talam, who is under investigation in the same case.
