Tension gripped Nairobi’s CBD after groups of armed men, mostly youths wielding rungus (wooden clubs), stormed the city centre in a bold and chaotic march.

Photos captured by the Star showed the men moving in groups,  others on motorbikes, shouting and brandishing crude weapons.

The armed men were reportedly deployed to counter protesters.

Some covered their faces, while others marched openly, disrupting business and causing panic among pedestrians.

The protesters came out on Tuesday to demonstrate against Albert Ojwang's murder, demanding the resignation of Deputy IG Eliud Lagat.

Lagat has since stepped aside to pave the way for investigations.

One group was captured walking along a tree-lined street, most holding sticks, appearing coordinated and confrontational.

This has caused traders to quickly shut down shops as the men approached.

The motive behind the group's actions remains unclear, but the incident has sparked fears of organised violence or political unrest.
