Two dead in Mombasa road accident

The injured victims were rushed to various hospitals within Mukaa sub-county

Two people have died while others sustained injuries in a grisly accident along the Nairobi–Mombasa highway at Malili area, Makueni County.

Mukaa Deputy County Commissioner Buxton Mayabi said the duo died on the spot after a 16-passenger matatu rammed into a trailer from behind at about 5.30 am on Tuesday.

“This is to confirm the accident that occurred at around 5.30 am today near Malili along the Nairobi–Mombasa highway,” Mayabi told reporters shortly after the accident occurred.

Mayabi said the motor vehicles were moving from Nairobi to Mombasa general direction when the incident happened.

Traffic officers from Mukaa police station responded to the accident by processing, documenting and clearing the scene.

The injured victims were rushed to various hospitals within Mukaa sub-county, while the bodies were moved to a local mortuary awaiting identification and postmortem.

“Two people died on the spot while injured victims rushed to various hospitals in Kilungu and Sultan Hammud,” Mayabi said.

The administrator called on drivers to be more careful while on the road to avoid such incidents.

“My call to the drivers is that they should be careful, especially during this rainy season, since roads are slippery. They should also ensure driving distance since it’s easy to lose brakes and cause accidents while driving very close to other motor vehicles,” he said.

Police have launched investigations into the cause of the accident.

The incident happened barely two days after five people cheated death along the same highway after their car got involved in a road accident at Kyumbi  in Machakos County on Sunday.

The quintet reportedly sustained minor injuries. They were treated and discharged at Machakos Level 5 Hospital.

The scene where the five cheated death is only a few kilometres from Malili where the two perished this morning.
