Wambua Mbithe, the lady who lost her eye and arm following an attack by hyenas, has begun the process of acquiring an artificial eye.

In an update by former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, the first stage of the process was a success, and she is scheduled for a review later on.

“The first process of artificial eye surgery transplant for Irene Wambua Mbithe (the lady who was attacked by hyenas featured in Shajara na lulu) was successful at the Lions' Firstsight Eye Hospital. She will be reviewed today. We wish her a quick recovery,” Sonko said on X.

The former Nairobi Governor took interest in Mbithe’s case after her plight was aired on Citizen TV’s Shajara na Lulu show last week.

He promised to help Mbithe get an artificial eye transplant in a live call to the studio.

Mbithe had her first check-up on Tuesday, April 8.

“As promised last week, today my team accompanied Irene Wambua Mbithe to Lions' Firstsight eye hospital for checkup and assessment. The process was successful, and she will now undergo an artificial eye transplant surgery on Friday morning.”

Sonko also said that he is in the process of engaging lawyers to pursue a compensation case and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to ensure all the culprits who led to her getting attacked by the hyenas are brought to book.

According to Mbithe, she was attacked as she ran away from a driver of a trailer who had given her a lift and wanted to assault her.

The incident happened at night after she had managed to escape from the trailer after it stopped.

She was running towards a police roadblock the driver had passed without being stopped.

Mbithe said that a cab driver who had seen the hyenas attack her tried to intervene by hooting, but the hyenas kept on dragging her away from the road.

He met police and reported the incident, and as they followed, they found her lying in a bush.
