President William Ruto has appointed former Lunga Lunga MP Khatib Abdallah Mwashetani as non-executive chairperson of the Board of Directors of the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).

The appointment, which took effect on March 28, is for a period of three years.

In a gazette notice, Ruto said he made the appointment “in exercise of the powers conferred by section 6 (1) (a) of the National Transport and Safety Authority Act, as read together with section 51 (1) of the Interpretation and General Provisions Act.”

In the gazette notice, Ruto said the appointment of Timothy Bosire to the position had been revoked.

Ruto made the appointment more than two months after Bosire, who is ODM National Treasurer and former Kitutu Masaba MP, rejected the offer.

In Gazette Notice Number 391, dated January 17, 2025, Ruto appointed Bosire as the chairperson of the NTSA for a period of three years, revoking the appointment of Dr Manoj Shah.

“After consultation with a section of the leadership, my family and friends, I have come to the conclusion that I must decline this appointment. I thank the appointing authority, His Excellency President William Ruto, for his consideration,” Mr Bosire said.

Bosire joined a list of Ruto’s appointees who have so far declined their appointments to various positions.

Former Information, Communication and Digital Economy CS Margret Ndung’u turned down Ruto’s appointment after being nominated as the High Commissioner to Ghana.

Before Ndung’u’s decision, former West Mugirango MP Vincent Kemosi also declined the same position, citing personal reasons.

Former Machakos Town MP Victor Munyaka also declined his appointment as chairman of the board of the Kenya Animal Genetic Resource Centre.

Mwashetani of the UDA party lost his seat in 2022 to Mangale Chiforomodo of the United Democratic Movement (UDM), which is affiliated to Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition.

Mwashetani failed to retain the seat that he held for two terms, having been elected for the first time in 2013 on a Ford-Kenya party ticket and reelected in 2017 on a Jubilee Party ticket.

Ten parliamentary candidates were in the race to dislodge Mwashetani in the 2022 general elections.

The poll area in Kwale County was created in 2013 after being hived off from the larger Msambweni constituency.
