One dead, vehicle torched in Malindi early morning accident

The driver, 28-year-old Mohamed Hassan, fled for dear life before presenting himself at the Malindi Police Station.

A 45-year-old boda-boda operator died early Saturday morning when the motorcycle he was riding collided with a lorry at the Furunzi area along the Malindi-Sala gate road. 

Kahindi Birya Fondo, 45, was pronounced dead on arrival at the Malindi Sub County Hospital, where he was rushed following the accident that involved his motorcycle registration number KMFD 253 W and a lorry registration number KCL 227 K. 

The lorry that was ferrying maize and wheat flour was reportedly looted before being set ablaze.

The driver, 28-year-old Mohamed Hassan, fled for dear life before presenting himself at the Malindi Police Station. 

Confirming the accident, Malindi Sub County Police Commander Jos Mudavadi said the lorry was heading towards Malindi town, when the motorcyclist joined an intersection from a feeder road and was run over, sustaining severe head injuries. 

Police and firefighters from the Malindi fire station rushed to the scene to stop the looting and extinguished the fire before transporting the motorcycle to the Malindi police station. 

The body is being preserved at the Malindi Sub County Hospital mortuary where it is expected to undergo an autopsy.
