A football fan was stoned and killed during a clash between opposing fans at the Jamhuri Grounds, Nairobi.
Police said five other fans were
rushed to the hospital with serious injuries after the Sunday evening clash.
Two teams were participating in
a game sponsored by a betting company when the fans disagreed and clashed,
police and witnesses said.
This prompted the opposing fans
to start pelting stones, during which they stormed the pitch, forcing the game to be stopped as
the players sought refuge.
Police said they had not been
informed of the march to organize proper security..
Witnesses said the clash was
prompted by what some fans called poor refereeing.
The groups clashed using stones,
seats and other objects, leaving six people with serious injuries.
They were rushed to the
hospital, where one succumbed to the injuries, Nairobi police boss George Sedah
said.
He said the police were alerted
and rushed to the scene, arresting three suspects.
“We are talking to the
organisers of the game as part of the probe into this tragedy. Police had not
been notified in time to plan properly,” he said.
The injured were admitted to the
hospital in stable condition even as police investigated the incident.
Meanwhile, a cart pusher was
arrested after he punched and killed a tout in a road rage incident in the Huruma
area, Nairobi.
Witnesses and police said the
deceased tout identified as Kennedy Oduor, 40 of Huruma Sacco was reversing his
matatu at Sokoni area when he accidentally hit a handcart which was loaded with
water jerricans.
This angered the cart pusher. He confronted the tout and punched him in a drama, sending him to
the tarmac road headfirst.
Police said he sustained serious
head injuries and was rushed to the MSF clinic along Juja Road, where he was
pronounced dead while undergoing treatment.
The suspect was later traced, arrested and detained for grilling ahead of a planned arraignment with murder, police said.
