Suna Suna East MP Junet Mohamed

Suna East MP Junet Mohamed has condemned Kenyans who turned out to celebrate former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s African Union Commission chairmanship bid loss.

The legislator referred to them as ‘unpatriotic’ saying they should have supported one of their own.

Addressing the House on Tuesday, Junet said that the loss did not shock him as much as the celebration witnessed in some parts of the country.

“The first thing that we need to look at is being a Kenyan, not from the community you come from, your colour and religion. How unpatriotic can some Kenyans be that they fought Raila for one year he has been campaigning and after losing they celebrated, we shall revisit that I can assure you, we will revisit at the right time, we shall have our day to laugh and to celebrate; it is not very far, it is coming,” Junet said.

The legislator said that in his position, he can never be unpatriotic if a Kenyan candidate is fronted for an international position.

He called on Kenyans to remain united and supportive when it comes to international positions for fellow country people.

“Kenyans knew well that this was not an election that was going to happen in the country. This was an election that was happening at the African Union, and some Kenyans became so unpatriotic by supporting a candidate against Kenya and even campaigning for him openly on social media and all kinds of spheres,” he added.

“What has shocked me is the celebration that happened in some parts of the country after we lost that election, this was not a Kenyan contest.”

This comes after some Kenyans were heard celebrating on social media after Raila lost the UC bid.

Kenya fronted former Prime Minister Raila Odinga for the position; however, he lost the AUC seat bid in an election held on Saturday in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Djibouti’s Foreign Affairs Minister Mahamoud Ali Youssouf won the race after securing 33 votes in the seventh round of voting

Raila faced Youssouf and Madagascar’s former Foreign Affairs Minister Richard Randriamandrato in the elections.

In a statement from the Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, CS Musalia Mudavadi said the country accepts the AUC chairmanship election results outcome.

“The Government of Kenya acknowledges the outcome of the African Union Commission (AUC) elections during the just concluded 38th Ordinary Session of the African Union Assembly in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and extends its congratulations to Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, the new Chair of the African Union Commission, his Deputy Chairperson, Ambassador Selma Malika Hadadi, and all the Commissioners,” he said on Monday.

He lauded the former Prime Minister, saying his campaign inspired hope and passion across the continent.

Mudavadi said the candidate represented Kenya with great respect, dignity, and resilience at every stage of the campaign, demonstrating true statesmanship.
