ODM supporters in the county will back whatever decision party leader Raila Odinga makes in the coming days, Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi has said.
Speaking in Wajir when he hosted Raila on Thursday, the Council of Governors chairperson said they have remained loyal to the veteran politician throughout his political career and that is not about to change.
Raila has been holding meetings with party members in his traditional support bases to gather their views on his next political move.
This follows his unsuccessful bid for the African Union Commission chairmanship last month. Over the years, residents have remained loyal to the party, something seen during general elections as Raila wins majority of votes.
The same is replicated in other elective seats. In 2022, the party won the governor, woman representative, Wajir South and West parliamentary seats.
Majority of MCA seats were won by the party. Abdullahi, who is serving his second term in office, pleaded with Raila to only engage those who believe in a united country, saying there is a crop of politicians advancing politics of tribalism.
“The people of Wajir have said they trust your sense of judgement. We are in ODM, we will be in ODM, we will negotiate, talk to and deal with whoever you Baba [Raila] has reached out to.”
Abdullahi said Raila has been consistent in protecting devolution, urging him to make sure devolution tops the agenda in their negotiations.
“As chairperson of Council of Governors, I plead with you that in any negotiations and agreement that you will have with any politician, the protection and safeguarding of devolution should be the cornerstone of negotiations and agreements,” he said.
Raila has toured Nyanza, Western and Coast to engage with his supporters before announcing his next political step.
