Police in Athi River, Machakos County, are investigating the brutal murder of a businesswoman who was attacked while on her way home from work at midnight on Sunday.
According to Athi River South subcounty police commander David Kandie, the woman, a well-known trader at Makadara shopping centre, had closed her milk shop and hired a bodaboda rider to take her home when the attack happened.
The assailants struck near a floodlight at Site Estate in Athi River, assaulting both the woman and the rider with crude weapons. The woman was left with deep cuts on her face and died at the scene.
The bodaboda rider, who sustained injuries during the assault, was rescued by a passerby and rushed to Kitengela Level Four Hospital in Kajiado County.
Police said he is in stable condition.
When officers arrived, they found the woman’s body lying on the ground. It was later moved to Shalom Community Hospital mortuary, where a postmortem will be conducted.
It was not immediately clear whether the attackers stole any of her belongings during the incident. Police said investigations have been launched to establish the motive of the murder and trace the suspects.
“We received reports of the attack from members of the public, and our officers rushed to the scene. We have already begun investigations into the killing,” Kandie said.
The killing has shocked residents of Athi River, where the deceased was known as a hardworking trader who served the community for years at her dairy shop.
