Utility back David Nyangige has joined KCB RFC ahead of the SportPesa National Sevens Circuit, which gets underway later this month.

Nyangige arrives from Impala RFC after becoming a free agent following a contract dispute with the club at the end of last season.

Capable of playing at both scrum-half and fly-half, Nyangige was one of Impala’s standout performers during last season’s sevens campaign. His impressive displays earned him a call-up to the Kenya Sevens squad.

His arrival strengthens an already formidable KCB side that is gearing up to defend the National Sevens Circuit title while also plotting a return to the summit of the Kenya Cup. This trophy has eluded the bankers for the past five seasons, with rivals Kabras RFC having dominated the competition.

KCB have recruited eight players in a bid to add depth, experience, versatility and youthful energy across both the forwards and backs. Also joining as free agents are lock Timfox Esikuri and utility back Salano Hillary.

The club has further strengthened with the acquisition of hooker Samson Mapesa from Kisii RFC, fly-half/full-back Benson Kihiti (Kenya Prisons), tight-head prop Collins Ngoko (MMUST) and versatile forward Innocent Indeche Murunda (Kisumu RFC).

KCB Rugby head coach Andrew Amonde said the new signings were carefully selected to fit the club’s philosophy. “We have brought in players who not only possess quality but also fit into the culture and playing philosophy of KCB Rugby. They provide depth in key positions and healthy competition within the squad, which is critical as we prepare for the National Sevens Circuit,” said Amonde.

“We are confident they will integrate well with the existing team and help us compete for honours this season,” Amonde emphasised that squad depth would be crucial during the demanding sevens campaign.

“Depth will be key during the sevens season because you pick up a lot of injuries. You need a strong bench to cope with injuries and any loss of form,” he added.

The bankers head into the circuit in impressive form after winning two pre-season tournaments. They lifted the KCB Met Sevens title with a 26-12 victory over Daystar Falcons a fortnight ago before claiming the Juja Sevens crown last weekend after defeating Blak Blad 22-5 in the final.
